ROOF RATS / NORWAY RATS

FACTS ON RATS

  1. Rats carry at least sixty (60) communicable diseases, including Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, Typhus, Bubonic Plague, Viral Hemorrhagic Fever, Weil’s Disease, Q Fever, Rat Bite Fever, and Meningitis. Known to bite people when they are sleeping, Rats transfer disease through saliva.
  2. Rats can tread water for three (3) days. They can survive being flushed down a toilet. Worse they can return to the bathroom the same way they were flushed!
  3. Rats teeth never stop growing! Growing at least five (5) inches in a year. Only maintained by gnawing and grinding to keep from out growing their mouth. They can chew through electrical wiring, sheetrock, wood, center blocks, lead pipes, etc.
  4. Rats will eat their own feces for nutritional value.
  5. Rats do not sweat. They regulate their temperature by constricting or expanding blood vessels in their tail. Rats also use their tail for balance.
  6. Rats are Nocturnal in nature, usually doing their feeding at night.
  7. Rats will produce up to 25,000 droppings in a year

ROOF RAT

Roof Rats are known by a variety of other names, including Palm Rats, Fruit Rats, Ship Rats, and Alexandrian Rats. Roof Rats are smaller in size then the Norway Rat and their tails are longer than their bodies. They can grow up to eighteen (18) inches in length including their tail and weighing at least five (5) oz. Roof Rats can be Black, Brown, or Grey in color. Roof Rats have large ears with pointy noses. They are good climbers and nest above ground. Nesting Sites include trees, shrubs, wood piles, Attics, cabinets, ceilings, Garages, inside walls and sheetrock, laundry rooms, patios, and pool areas. The Roof Rats diet is similar to Squirrels. This means they mainly eat nuts and fruits. However if they are hungry enough they will eat just about anything including Ornamental Plants, Dog and Cat Food, Farm Feed, Vegetables, Nuts, Seeds, Tree Bark, Insects, Lizards, Paper, Candle Wax, etc. Water source for Roof Rats include Bird Baths, Leaky Pipes, Air Conditioning Condensation Drip Lines, Pets Water Bowls, Saucers Under Potted Plants, Irrigation Lines, etc. Most common infestation sign is the droppings of the Rat. Gnawing or scratching noises in the attic and walls. Gnaw marks around the home or in the Attic. Spotting them running on the power lines or across screen enclosures onto your roof top. Grease trails and marks along their travel routes. Nests found in the insulation of your home. A Roof Rat female can have a litter of five to eight babies. Roof Rat females can have as many as three (3) litters a year. A Roof Rat can fit through an opening as small as a quarter.

NORWAY RAT

Norway Rats are greyish-brown but colors may vary. It weighs 10 to 16 ounces when fully mature with a body length of 7 to 10 inches with the tail being 6-8 inches long. The Norway Rat has a heavy and thick body with a blunt nose. Its has small ears with large and protruding black eyes. The Norway Rats life span is around one (1) year. It can have four (4) to seven (7) litters per year. Norway Rats are also nocturnal and feed on similar items as the Roof Rat. The Norway Rat likes to Burrow and stay close to the ground most of the time but are very good climbers as well. It can enter a hole the size of a quarter. The Roof Rat and the Norway Rat have a lot in common.

MICE

A mouse is a small Rodent characteristically having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a small body length with a scaly tail and a high breeding rate. Mice are polyestrous and breed year round. It is usually nocturnal. The average litter size of a mouse is ten (10) to twenty (20) pups. Their diet consists of any type of fruit or grains from plants. Mice adapt well with the growing Human population.
